The Difference Between Being Competent and Being Visible

For a long time, we believed that hard work was enough.
We thought, "If I consistently delivered quality work, stayed committed, and gave my best, the right opportunities would naturally find me."
Sometimes they did.
But many times, they didn't.
It took me a while to realise that competence and visibility are not the same thing.
You can be highly skilled and still be overlooked if people don't understand the value you bring.
One of the biggest shifts in my career came when I stopped seeing communication as self-promotion and started seeing it as advocacy.
Advocating for yourself isn't about boasting. It's about helping others understand your impact.
It's being able to confidently explain the following:
What you've accomplished.
The problems you've solved.
The value you consistently bring to a team or organisation.
When I became intentional about communicating my ideas, my work, and my strengths with clarity, I began to access opportunities I once believed were out of reach.
Here's what I want you to remember:
Hard work opens doors. Clear communication helps you walk through them.
If you've ever found yourself saying, "I'm not good at talking about myself," you're not alone. It's a skill that can be learnt, practised, and strengthened.
This week, challenge yourself to speak about your work with a little more confidence. Your voice deserves to be heard just as much as your work deserves to be recognised.
Ready to communicate your value with confidence? I'd love to help you develop the clarity and confidence to position yourself for greater opportunities.
